Penyebabnya belum diketahui secara pasti, namun berkaitan erat dengan factor-faktor berikut:

> Alergi atau intoleransi dengan susu sapi: Bayi tidak mempunyai enzim dalam jumlah cukup untuk mencernakan komponen gula susu, sehingga terbentuk gas yang berlebihan dalam usus. Anda dapat mengganti susu formula dengan susu yang komponen proteinnya telah mengalamipencernaan sebelumnya (Nan-HA, Isomil), susu dengan kadar laktosa rendah (Pediasure, Pepti junior) atau susu kedelai (Nutrilon soya, Nursoy)

> Jika bayi anada termasuk bayi yang cepat menghabiskan susu botol, pilihlah dot yang lubangnya lebih kecil.

> Sistem pencernaan yang belum sempurnaa pada bayi premature menyebabkan kontraksi usus yang terlalu kuat.

Kolik adalah nyeri yang terjadi pada organ yang berbentuk seperti tabung, seringkali disebabkan karena organ tersebut terpelintir, tersumbat atau mengalami kejang. Kolik dapat terjadi pada usus, saluran empeduatau saluran kemih. Pada bayi kolik terjadi pada usus dan lebih sering menyerang bayi yang berumur antara 3 minggu hingga 5 bulan. Pada bayi premature kolik ini dapat terjadi 6-8 mingu dari waktu yang seharusnya Anda melahirkan dia secara normal.

Kolik pada bayi ditandai dengan tangisan yang terus menerus. Meskipun menangis merupakn salah satu cara bayi berkomunikasi dengan orang lain, namun bayi yang sedang mengalami kolik mempunyai tangisan yang berbeda. Tangisan bayi kolik adalah tangisan yang berlebihan tanpa sebab yang pasti. Tangisan mereka bukan pertanda mereka lapar, haus, sakit,butuh dipeluk atau butuh digendong. Tangisan merka juga bukan terjadi karena anda telah melakukan atau tidak melakukan sesuatu kepada dia. Meskipndemikian jika ditangani dengan benar kolik dapat menjadi problem yang menyulitkan dan melelahkan, baikbagi anda maupun bayi anda.

Pada bayi prematuryang biasanya tenang dan banyak tidur tiba-tiba menjadi rewel. Namun tidak perlu terlalu kawatir karena kolik juga bisa menjadi tanda bahwa dia bertambah matang.
